She was married to Theophilus Stout on May 6, 1852 in New Hope, PA. by the Rev. M. H. Sisty. It is recorded that Theophilus was from Lambertville, NJ. It is unknown whether or not they had any children. Elizabeth however did purchase a double house and lot fronting on Main Street in New Hope, Pa. from her father Edward's (1) estate. It is believed that she resided at 53 North Union Street in Lambertville, NJ. sometime after Theophilus' death with her three daughters.
William, (3) was born the 2nd child & 1st son of Edward (1) & Catherine (Conover) Pickett on January 8, 1834 presumably in New Hope. He was married to Phoebe Maria Kitchen on March 7, 1854 by the Rev. E. Green in New Hope. Phoebe was born on March 7, 1835. Her parent's names are unknown at this time. William (3) died on July 5, 1904 at the age 70 & was interred next to his wife. They had 6 Children (possibly 7 - Sarah still unsure).
Mary Ann, (4) was born the 3th child & 1st dau of Edward (1) & Catherine (Conover) Pickett in ca. 1835 presumably in PA. She married a man with the last name of Dobbins. She purchased the south half of the double house fronting on River Street, from her father Edward's (1) estate. Nothing further is known on this family.

First to a Margaret or Carry _____ who was born in 1851 in PA. Margaret presumably died prior to December, 1890. He then married Clarissa H. Saxton who was born in Mar, 1850. The parents of both women are unknown at this time. The census of 1860 shows Jacob (6) at age 19 & being a "Boat Builder" with his father Edward (1). The census of 1880 shows him residing on Main Street in New Hope. Clarissa is shown as purchasing what was known as "The Homestead Lot" fronting on Main Street in New Hope, Pa. from her father-in-law Edward's (1) estate during that settlement in December, 1890. Jacob (6) also purchased a lot known as the Grave Yard Hollow lot, by the canal, from his father Edward's (1) estate. The census of 1900, however, shows him & Clarissa residing in Solebury. Possibly Clarissa was from Solebury based on this move. The date of Jacob's (6) death is unknown as is that of his first wife. However, Jacob's (6) second wife is recorded as dying in 1931. There are no known children by either marriage.
John S. & Louisa J. (Everitt) Pickett cir. 1920, New Hope, Pa. |
John, (7) was born the 6th child & the 3rd son of Edward (1) & Catherine (Conover) Pickett on August 8, 1844. He apparently was born in New Hope. He married Louisa J. Everitt on October 3, 1866 in Lambertville, NJ. She was born on January 13, 1846 to Jonathan & Mary A. (Naylor) Everitt in NJ. Louisa purchased the north half of the double house fronting on River Street from her father-in-law Edward's Estate. John (7) died on December 27, 1925 at the age of 81 & was interred in Riverview Cem., Lambertville, NJ on December 31, 1925. His wife Louisa died on August 18, 1927 also at the age of 81 & was interred next to her husband on August 20, 1927.
Joseph, (8) was born the 7th child & the 4th son of Edward (1) & Catherine (Conover) Pickett in March, 1848. He was born in New Hope based on the census of 1850. There is some evidence that he was married twice. The name of his 1st wife, if there was one, is unknown at this time. He married Emily M. Terry on February 4, 1890 in Vincentown, NJ. Emily was born the dau of Walter W. & Sara Jane (Flood) Terry in January or early February, 1848.
During Joseph's (8) early life he was a canal "boatbuilder", learning the trade of carpentry from his father. He resided on Main Street according to the Census of 1880, possibly still with his parents. He probably lived with his parents until his father's death in ca. 1888. He later became a "Storekeeper" or merchant in a store on Bridge Street that was along the canal, in a building still standing (1998). He moved to a house, also on the canal on Mechanic Street which is also still standing, & serves as a store (1994). Joseph is said to haunt that house to this day. (See Appendix B)
While running his store on Bridge Street, Joe (8) started, without ever having a lesson, to paint landscapes. It is believed that he started painting in his late 50's or early 60's. Joe's (8) paintings are basically in the style used by Grandma Moses, that is, most things painted were simplistic & out of scale, however they were rich with colors.
Joseph's (8) paintings now hang in the New York Museum of Modern Art in New York City, & the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ. His most famous painting is that of "Manchester Valley" (See Appendix B) which is a painting of the old New Hope High School. During 1990, it was brought to my attention that a "study" of this painting was being sold by an art gallery in New York City. I believe that Joseph (8), an untrained artist, would have never made a study & therefore feel this to be a fake. The selling price is over $100,000.00. The titles of the other paintings that the author is sure are his works include "Coryell's Ferry" & "Washington under the Council Tree".
Other paintings that have surfaced that are claimed to be his work include "Red House on the Hill" & "Sunset on the Lehigh Canal, New Hope". These two have not, as yet, been verified to the satisfaction of the author as Joe Pickett (8) originals.
In the 1890's, Joe (8) ran a "shooting gallery" at the Neshaminy Falls Grove, then a well known amusement park, on the Neshaminy, just a few miles above Hulmeville. It is believed that this is where he met his wife, Emily. He was also known to often run concession stands at multiple fairs & parks around the county until his marriage. After his marriage, he led a more stay-at-home life.
Joseph (8) inherited some money of an unknown amount from his father Edward's estate. Joseph Pickett (8) died on December 12, 1918 at the age of 70. His funeral was held in New Hope, with interment in the Hulmeville Cemetery in Hulmeville, Pa. His wife, Emily, died in 1929 at the age of 81 & is interred next to her husband. They also have a footstone on their grave. There is no known photograph of Joseph, however he & his brother John S. (7) were said to look just like twins. A photo of John (7) is part of this document. Joseph & Emily never had any children.
Isabella, (9) was born the 8th & last child & 4th dau of Edward (1) & Catherine (Conover) Pickett on September 14, 1851. She appears to have been born in New Hope based on the census of 1860. Isabella (9) was married twice. She first married John C. Holcombe who was born in ca. 1838. They had two known children together. John died on April 18, 1872 at the age of 34 and was interred in the Mt. Hope Cem., Lambertville close to his dau Matilda (31). Isabella (9) then married Charles T. Kitchin as the book titled "History of Bucks County" [written by Battle, page 1095] shows. Charles was born in ca. 1847, his parents however are currently unknown. This same book mentions that Charles T. Kitchin had a stepson named Joseph Holcombe which further assures the marriage. She must have married Charles in ca. 1873. Charles died on November 23, 1887 at the age of 40 and was interred in Mt. Hope Cem., Lambertville near Isabella's (9) first husband John. Isabella (9) died on April 8, 1920 at the age of 68 and was interred by her second husband Charles. Isabella is believed to have had 8 children
